On Thursday, March 30, the UW Chapter of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School hosted the first of a three-part interprofessional patient safety training program. The “First, Do No Harm” training videos are a three-part series developed by the Partnership for Patient Safety (P4PS) to assist healthcare delivery organizations and schools implement a patient-centered, system-based approach to reducing preventable patient harm. Julie Duncan, the Director of the UWMC Center for Clinical Excellence, facilitated the discussion during the Part 1 screening. Health sciences students from a number of different disciplines participated: Orthotics and Prosthetics, Dietetics, Master's of Public Health, Master's of Healthcare Administration, Doctor of Pharmacy, and Doctor of Nursing Practice.
The facilitated discussions focused on identifying systems failures and their possible solutions. Students also learned a powerful team communication tool known as CUS. This is becoming a standard tool for healthcare providers, patients and family members to draw attention to a possible a patient safety situation. CUS stands for "Concern, Uncomfortable, and Safety". To use the tool, the communicator verbally states "concern" about a situation, explains that s/he is "uncomfortable" with the situation, and that it poses a threat to patient "safety". For example, "I am concerned about______. I feel uncomfortable with________. I feel this is a patient safety situation."
Part 2 of the series will be presented on April 20, 2017 from 5-6:30 pm. Jessica Yanny-Moody from the UWMC Center for Clinical Excellence will facilitate the discussion. All health sciences students, faculty and anyone at the UW interested in health care or working with health care organizations or providers are invited. The IHI Open School UW Chapter will provide refreshments.
