Interprofessional Studies on Injury Prevention & Control Educational Modules

For UW Students & Faculty

The University of Washington (UW) is a leader in injury research and translational injury prevention work. This injury control curriculum is a collaboration led by the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) with all of the UW Health Science Schools (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Social Work) to provide education in injury prevention, care of injured patients and injury control science to the next generation of health care providers and researchers.

Funding for these modules was provided by the Josiah Macy Junior Foundation.

The Harborview Injury Prevention Research Center seeks to reduce the impact of injury and violence on people’s lives through research, education, training, and public awareness. Injury control is a scientific field that applies many principles from other health fields to the reduction of injury. This field uses several ways to try to reduce the burden of injury. This includes researching injuries to understand the mechanism, the impact and its risks so that they can be evaluated and targeted. Injury control focuses on prevention of injury, because there is no treatment for many injuries, such as traumatic brain injury, but injury control also includes acute care after injury and rehabilitation.

Each module is developed to reflect regional and local population health needs and provide education in injury prevention, care of injured patients, and injury control science to the next generation of health care providers and researchers. While each module has specific topics, underlying themes including risk assessment, examination of affected populations, effective methods to change behavior or the environment, and evaluation of interventions are present in all modules.

The modules are also designed to support flexible integration into the classroom and provide a foundation for an injury curriculum to expand in future years. Modules can be imported together or individually into existing Canvas courses. Students can also individually access these modules at https://canvas.uw.edu/courses/1167632.
